It is a wonderful thing to spot a common merganser gliding across the water with its distinctive long, serrated bill. I have always thought that watching these elegant diving ducks during their nesting season is one of the true highlights of a peaceful afternoon spent by the lake. It is a fine sight to see them diving so skillfully to catch a fish while their sleek feathers catch the light just right.
